Game – Sponge Warz

Sponge Warz is more than a game.

Sponge Warz is more like a way of life.  It is an all camp game that I have been playing since the early 1990’s.  A good friend brought Sponge Warz back to Kenesserie from another camp in the late 1980’s.  The key is to make this game an event – music pounding, water everywhere, live commentary over a PA system – the bigger the spectacle the better.

Here is the layout I have. Let me know if you have questions.

Sponge Warz Layout

this game can take:
  • 1.5 hours to 3 hours
# of teams:
  • 4 to 8 teams
# of campers on each team:
  • 15 to 30
supplies needed:
  • sponges (10 per participant)milk crates, large garbage pail and a water jug (one per team)
  • two kiddy pools
  • one large tarp or old pool liner
  • circle markers (flour, rope, tape etc)
how it works:
  • the object of the game is to get everyone wet·
  • if you want to keep score it is scored by the number of times your water jug is knocked off of your milk crate during battle mode and the number of times you knock off your own jug during target practice mode
  • players throw sponges at milk crates and other players
  • there are two modes to the game – battle mode and target practice mode.  a full game consists of three segments – battle mode (20-30 minutes), target practice mode (15-25 minutes), and another battle mode (20-40 minutes)
  • during battle mode the teams try to knock off each others water jugs. each time a water jug is knocked off it is recorded by the judge.  each team is allowed two guards with garbage can lids inside of their circle to protect their water jug.  when a water jug is knocked off the guards put it back onto the milk crate.  the throwers can not enter the circle while throwing but can reach in to bring sponges out that are sitting in the circle.  players who are hit with sponges lay wounded on the field and can only be revived by the medical officer
  • each team has a medical officer who helps players who have been hit get back into the game by touching them with their wand (a spoon or some other weird object)
  • during target practice mode all of the sponges are put on the centre tarp.  each team moves it’s milk crate and water jug to the side of the tarp and the team stands on the other side of the tarp.  one spotter can be with the water jug to put it back up.  each team sends one human caterpillar onto the tarp to throw sponges out to their team.  each time the jug is knocked off the judge marks it off.
setup:
  • create a circle of about 10 feet in diameter for each team and place a milk crate in the middle of each circle.  On each milk crate place a capped water jug with about one (1) inch of water to weigh it down
  • place a garbage pail of water to the outside of each circle
  • place the tarp in the middle of the playing area with a kiddy pool at each end of the tarp
  • put all of the sponges on the tarp
  • you need one judge per team circle to count the number of times the jug gets knocked off
other notes:
  • the number of knock offs during battle mode is subtracted from the number of knock offs during target practice mode.  The winner is the team with the highest number of knock offs.
