Staff Training Notes – Camphacker podcast #37

Things to consider – these are typed in from a sheet that I was doodling on as we worked through the podcast.

You can listen to the podcast here:  http://camphacker.tv/camphacker-podcast/2012/9/retaining-staff-training-camphacker-37

Joe’s Notes –
  • How to Learn – what is the best way to get staff to learn – different people learn differently
  • What is the most important thing to pass on?
  • Remove theory – no lectures (15 minutes only of talking)
  • Should be more tips and tricks vs lectures – speak from experience
  • Focus on three (3) things
  • Never ask if they have questions at the end of a session – have them write down questions and have them submit them and take a portion of the day – maybe just after diner – to answer the questions that come up during the day.
  • The point of staff training is for staff to retain information taught.
  • Ways for people to grasp the learning – Journalling, Group Discussion, Role Playing
  • Questions to ask when planning:
  • Do they need to know this?
  • Why does this staff member care about this information?
  • What did you learn today?
  • Guidelines for training – Camp Oureau
  • From the past – counsellor/staff letters
  • Success is trying – it is the experimenting – not always the end outcome
  • What is learning?
  • Passive Learning vs Active Learning
  • If you need to move, doodle, draw – do it – we want you to absorb the information being taught/presented.
  • TDWNTBD – To Do What Needs To Be Done – the one line job description we use at Pearce Williams
  • Just thoughts as we worked through the podcast.

Thought I would share – have a listen and let me know what you think.
