Each summer at camp I am reminded of the fact that a new idea that I have can take as many as three years to catch on with the summer camp staff.
I realized this after a few years of being a camp director. I am constantly on the hunt for the new and the next – part of the reason I am head to Australia in November – to explore and feed my curiosity.
So each year I try to bring new items to camp for the staff to use to entertain the campers – might be raccoon circles, might be portable frisbee golf, or a new spinning wheel. I have realized that I introduce something and for it to catch on can take up to three years…why is that.
Change is difficult. New ideas take time for people to understand how they can be used to fulfil our mission.
Do not be afraid of change, but also do not push it too fast – let it happen in a natural manner.
Camp is about changing people…let it happen.
