What do you do the rest of the year?

What do we do the rest of the year?

This is a question that camp directors get much more than you would think – or maybe you are one of the people who ask this question of your camp director friends.

The camp year never really stops. I normally start to think about the next summer in July. This is normal for me after years in camping – I need to get the summer dates approved by my Board of Directors so that we can move forward with the promotion and the camp brochure for the following summer.

At the beginning of each summer we also start to think ahead to the leadership team for the following summer – who on our spring staff has shown potential for more responsibility, what are our thoughts – things they still need to work on during the summer.

September is all about wrapping up the summer, school groups and rental groups. We also report on grants, do final accounting and start the brochure production for the next summer. October is still rentals for us, final production on the brochure, getting Christmas cards ready, plan our t-shirts for our Christmas promotion, budgeting work for the new fiscal year.

November and December start the grant cycle with staffing grants, United Way application, Trillium Foundation application, staff applications, CIT applications, rental groups.

January – financial review and audit, staff hiring, camper registration, rental groups, school group packages out. More grants to write and follow up on.

It goes on and on and on…

There is always something to do at camp – our calendar is always busy…

What do you do the rest of the year? I get ready for the summer. #summercampmatters
