There is no part of me that wants to see a youth get fired from summer camp.
As a camp director I want to see you grow, learn and succeed. I want to see the passion light up in your eyes. I want to see you change the life of a child. I want to see you leave camp a better person that when you arrived. I want to see you be amazing.
I have always said that by the time you are sitting across from the camp director you have made all the choices that have lead you to that place in your camp career, you have made the choice to leave.
After you have gone I am sad that we lost someone, I’m not vindictive, I’m not happy – I am sad that we could not have you as part of our team. But in the end it comes down to what is in the best interest of the campers.
What is in the best interest of the campers?
This question should guide all of us each summer.

My heart as well Joe.
Thanks Ben – it is something that I think many camp directors think about but rarely share with staff who are let go…
