In my life, my work, my family, my goals and my mind? How do I affect change that will be meaningful, long lasting and help to make that world a better place?
I started my 10th year at Pearce Williams today. What does the future hold for me? As change is happening at camp – the new barn, Hume’s Hall, World Camp, Farm Camp – my mind is always wondering what it next and how can we continue to stay at the front of the change.
This year at camp also marks my 26th summer working on staff at summer camps. I just put an excel spreadsheet together that listed all the years, all the camps and all the roles that I have played at camp. Since 1988 I have only missed two summers at camp.
To see your life’s work put down on 27 lines of a spreadsheet makes it seem so little. But, upon reflection, it misses so much.
“Life’s work” misses so much if you just look at the raw numbers. It misses my loves, my children, my family. It misses the moments that I will never know mattered – the kind words spoken that people remember, the smile that makes a campers day, the crazy actions that made a lifelong memory for camper, It misses the everyday interactions, the training of 1000’s of staff, the one on one talks with 100’s of staff members, the moments with 1000’s of campers.
So those 27 lines of an excel spreadsheet make me wonder about what the next 27 lines will bring.
Change is happening. Are you ready to ride the wave?
