Today we sent home our first camper of the summer. Never an easy decision, but one that has to be made. Years ago I worked as a Camp Director at a camp for children in desperate need of camp, like a Tim Horton’s Camp but with none of the money. The first session I directed at that camp we had 96 campers arrive to camp on the bus and at the end of a 13 day session we had 60 campers go home on the bus. In the in between time we had sent home 36 campers. We had no idea how to deal with the camper behaviors that we saw that summer in 1996 – it seems so long ago now… Here at Pearce Williams it is strange to home a camper. Our staff know how to deal with many different camper behaviors and how to get campers to grow and learn at camp. But sometimes there are still campers who present a challenging Behaviour that can not be reached – for whatever reason. It is not the campers fault. It is not the counsellors fault. It is not the fault of the staff – just that at this moment in time that camper can not be reached…or helpedenkough by us to get through the week without negatively impacting the stay of other campers. Got lots of other things done today – another tetherball pole in, another basketball pole in, tour with our accountants, a swim, a trip into town to pick up supplies. Good day today, camp is the place to be.
