Saturday off – away from camp at a soccer tournament for my 8 year old son. Three games played while I sat on the sidelines.
Got to thinking about the skills that we give our staff members after watching the young referee’s at the tournament. A linesman listening to an iPod; referees not blowing the whistle loud enough; referees starting to blow the whistle then not after they waited that moment too long. It illustrated to me that the skills that are learned by our camp staff would allow them to referee more efficiently than the youth who were doing the job today.
We train our staff to be loud, to ensure that campers hear aha they say. We certainly do not allow a counsellor’s attention to be split between an iPod and the campers.
The skills that our staff learn should carry them through many different situations as they move onto other jobs. Camp gives skls that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
I wish they trained soccer referees better…
